How To Clone Yourself In Final Cut Pro X – The Clone Effect

Video Transcript

Welcome back to Kagan tech and today  I’m going to be showing you guys how I pulled off the cloning effect in my previous video, that’s my how to select a tripod for YouTube video. So in other to get a clean cloning effect in final cut, you are going to need to take note of three very important things.

The first thing is you need to keep the camera in the same position for all your shot, in other to make these very easy I’ll advice that you should just take a single take, like you should record all of your videos in one single long take and then you can begin to cut them and clip them together in post production.

The second thing that you should keep in mind is you have to avoid casting shadows, like as you can see in this clip here, the first take was actually casting a shadow on the wall which in the end by the time I brought the second take into the shot it was going to be pretty obvious because my fill light wasn’t that strong because of the kind of lighting I was going for like the I thought it was the best lighting for the  scenery so I didn’t want, what’s that word now, yeah I didn’t want to have too much lighting so my fill light was pretty weak. The solution to that is to record a clean take of your scene initially before you begin to record. So just allow the camera to run on the scene for like 30 seconds so that you can have extra background takes that you can use for your shot.

And the third thing that you want to keep in mind is you should have a separator of some sort in mind, it doesn’t have to be a visible line, it doesn’t have to be something that you can see, I mean it could be but it doesn’t necessarily have to be, but you have to have a separator of some sort to divide both characters or all your 3 or 4 characters that you are cloning so that you will avoid your subjects overlapping when you have the videos timed right next to each other.

So essentially once you have these three things down and you take your clean shots, like your clean videos , it is very important for you to understand that from here the job is almost done, it’s pretty easy if the video that you are using is clean and properly taken, all you have to do is crop the video and lay them on top of each other, essentially the way I did this for my own cloning effect is I had my first take, my original take at the top and I just come down here to the transform button and I click the drop down menu and I select crop, from there all I have to do is drag the video to the separator that I already had in mind. In my video I’m using the pillar in my shot for the separator, so I basically just drag and crop it right there and then I drop the second take that’s the second clone, the video for the second clone I drop it right underneath this and once you do that you don’t even need to crop the other video essentially it’s just, it’s running together in time and you have a perfect, I don’t know, you have a perfect clone. You could do this for 2,3,4,5 clones, depending on you know, what you are trying to achieve.

Another thing that you would need to pay attention to is your scripting and timing, see this part is very important because if I didn’t script this video properly and I didn’t time it properly, it would be difficult to make the, what is it called, the 2 clones look like they are talking to each other, so you really need to think about what you are trying to do before you actually shoot the video because without that then you are just going to have 2 videos that don’t really, they don’t really do much for you, they don’t really communicate together but yeah as long as you can get the takes right, you have your scripts perfectly done and you have your timings right, all you have to do now in post production is just crop and align your clips together.

Another very important tip to keep in mind is you should probably get an external monitor for this especially if you are shooting by yourself, you want to be able to see what you are shooting so that you don’t make to many mistakes that cannot be corrected in post production. So, yeah if you are shooting by yourself without an assistant or even if you have an assistant I advice you to hook this up to a bigger display so you can see what you are trying to do.
