How To Sound Smarter Than You Really Are

Everybody wants to look and sound sagely and smart in public but few have the right resources to pull it off. In this article, we will be talking on some simple easy to remember tips that would help you look and sound much smarter than you actually are.

A popular saying goes ‘dress how you want to be addressed’ and another goes ‘first impressions matter’; needless to say, dressing smart or at least decently will always be one of the most important things about sounding smarter than you are. You might sound very smart, but if you look shabby, nobody might even want to listen in the first place. If you can’t dress smart or modest, dress eccentric. Wear something so long out of fashion to be cool again (not baggy jeans and timberlands, please).

Talk very little. If for instance you’re in a group discussion, listen to what everyone is saying, look intently at them while they are speaking without making any remark and when they are rounding up, ask a simple question like ‘What did you say your name was, sir?’ and when they reply, just nod or write it down.

When speaking, be very audible and relate events that you are talking about to something a bit obscure. If you are talking about why you feel astrology is ridiculous, relate it to a book like William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar where a character says ‘in us lies the fault, not in our stars’. When speaking of the dangers of something like negligence, use an analogy in a popular movie. This makes you seem knowledgeable in a lot of areas but also human.

When asked a question you aren’t sure of the answer, think about it critically and if you are sure you do not know it, say so or say that you do not remember. No man is an island of knowledge and you can’t be expected to know everything.

When in a discussion, ask random things (which you can use if you know how to link stuff) like ‘Has anyone here read Buchi Emecheta’s Joys of Motherhood?’ to throw people off balance. If anyone asks you why you asked, mutter something incomprehensible or say that they would know in due time.

You sound and seem smarter than you really are when you have the veneer of mystery around you. Keep people on edge but not over and this will always work for you. is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, and we get a commission on purchases made through our links.
