How To Use Twitter As Your RSS Feed Reader

A lot of RSS readers died along with Google reader, mostly because they all depended on data from Google reader. The rss readers you grew to love fell apart and there was nothing you could do about it. Maybe the few alternatives you find available now are not exactly as easy to use or as straight forward as you might like them to be.

We like to think twitter I straight forward enough. Yes? If you agree then let us walk you through how you can turn your twitter account into a supercharged RSS reader that gives you up to the second updates from your favorite websites and content peddlers.

Two things you need to achieve this: Twitter lists and the turn on notification feature.

How do twitter lists work?

Well it’s quite simple, separate from your timeline you can have multiple timelines for only a selected number of accounts which you wish to recieve updates from. The beauty of twitter lists is the fact that you do not even have to be following accounts you wish to add to your lists and better yet your lists can be private. Meaning no one but you has to know you have a list containing so so and so persons.

How to create a twitter list

Please refer to our post: How To Create A Twitter List << After you have learnt how to create twitter lists, we can now proceed.

Now to the previous goal of staying updated with information from your favorite websites. All you need to do now is visit the twitter profiles of all the blogs/websites you intend to follow up and add them to your new list. At this point I Imagine your list should have a name you understand. For example “websites I am stalking”. Add up all of your information sources and you can begin to see a clean stream of updates from your designated content peddlers.

Tweetdeck let’s you take this a step further by allowing you filter the updates you see in your lists. You can filter by content as in images or videos or even links. That means you can decide to ignore updates that aren’t blogposts and the likes.

Method 2: Instant Twitter Updates

As this post is also intended to help you with immediate updates incase of time sensitive situations, you can get instant feed updates from your desired content peddlers by simply turning on notifications on their accounts. All you have to do is visit their profiles and click the star button or “turn on notification” button to start receiving instant updates. This works just the same way you would receive notification for mentions and direct messages. You get a pop up on your phone for new updates. (Please note this only works on Android and iOS devices for the moment. Blackberry OS twitter will not let you recieve notifications, not even if you are using the android apk version) Quite simply enough, you also don’t have to worry about having so many instant notification that you can not keep track off. In your account settings there is a page dedicated to showing you all the accounts you are currently subscribed to for notifications and you can easily remove them there.

Hopefully this tutorial has helped you figure out how to use your twitter as a supercharged RSS reader. This will help you stay up to date with more than ordinary rss content from your favorite website.

Note that this tutorial is only valid if the businesses or publishers you wish to follow have twitter accounts that they update very regularly (most decent businesses do and any content publisher who does not share their content via twitter in a timely manner aren’t really content publishers now are they?). If they do not, this may have been a complete waste of your time.
